The Buyer Wants It. So Why Won’t They Commit?

The Used RV Inventory Problem
It's costing dealers deals this summer
You are heading into the busiest selling season of the year, and summer is the moment RV dealership's inventory strategy have been waiting for since January.
But something is off.
The used inventory you need to move (trade-ins, pre-owned units buyers actually want) either is not there in the right mix or is sitting on your lot longer than it should. Meanwhile, buyers are shopping online, building budgets, comparing payment estimates, and checking what their current RV is worth before they ever pick up the phone.
If they do not get a real number from you first, they will get it from someone else.
This is the problem sitting underneath all the summer optimism. And if you are an RV, powersports, or marine dealer right now, it is probably more familiar than you would like to admit.
What Is Actually Happening in the RV Market Right Now
The RV industry is not in a slump but it is not the boom years either, and the gap between those two realities is exactly where dealers are getting squeezed.
Retail RV sales are down roughly 14 to 15 percent compared to last year, with motorized units taking the biggest hit. Dealerships are stocking fewer models and focusing on proven sellers due to lower shipment volumes.
At the same time, the used RV market tells a different story. Used RV inventory velocity is driven more by pricing discipline than brand prestige. Buyers who cannot afford new are looking at used. Buyers who sold during the pandemic boom and want back in are looking at used. And buyers who are simply more value-aware than they were three years ago are looking at used.
The demand is there. The challenge is making sure your used inventory is priced right, listed well, and turning fast enough to keep your floor plan from hurting your profit.
By late 2025, over $3.77 billion in RV models remained unsold, with average age exceeding 7 months as newer models drew buyer attention and future production loomed. Dealers felt pressure from buyers demanding discounts, lenders tightening floorplan terms, and OEM incentives undercutting older units.
That is the pattern heading into summer 2026. Inventory that sits costs you money every single day. And yet most dealers do not have a clear system for catching aging units before they become a problem.
Why NPA's RV Summer Spectacular Matters for Dealers Right Now
National Powersport Auctions recognized the gap. In early June, NPA rolled out a month-long promotion aimed at helping RV dealers replenish pre-owned inventory during one of the industry's busiest retail periods. The RV Summer Spectacular provides dealers access to hundreds of pre-owned motorhomes, campers, fifth wheels, and travel trailers available through NPA's nationwide network and 15 monthly live auctions.
"Summer is one of the strongest selling seasons for RV dealers, and NPA is committed to helping our dealers secure the inventory they need to capitalize on customer demand," said Matt Amata, vice president of RV and marine for National Powersport Auctions.
The promotion goes further than just auction access. Every RV purchased through NPA during June includes a complimentary digital advertising package, with high-resolution vehicle photography, a streamlined condition report, and marketing assets that dealers can use to quickly list inventory online. First-time RV dealers who join NPA during June receive a complimentary one-year membership.
Getting a unit on your lot is only half the job. Getting it in front of buyers who are already shopping, that is the other half. And right now, most buyers are doing their research online long before they contact a dealer.
The Real Problem Is Not Inventory But What Happens Before the Buyer Calls
Inventory availability and pricing discipline matters, but neither one solves the core issue: buyers are making up their minds before they ever talk to you.
The new buyer arrives pre-researched, expects a written quote before a phone call, and judges the store on response speed and clarity within the first 90 seconds.
Think about the buyer looking at a pre-owned fifth wheel on your website. They have been shopping for three weeks. They know what comparable units are listing for. They know interest rates are high. And the first thing they want to know is what their current RV is worth.
If your website cannot answer that question, they leave and go somewhere else.
It is one of the most common, and frustrating, conversation taking place in dealerships across America right now in 2026. Buyers show up for a trade-in conversation and are surprised by the number. That surprise, or "trade-in shock," is hurting deals that should have closed.
The fix is not complicated. It just requires giving buyers real information before they walk in.
Trade-In Shock Is a Lead Problem, Not Just a Pricing Problem
When a buyer gets surprised by their trade-in value in the F&I office, the deal often falls apart. They feel misled even if you never misled them. They built their budget around a number in their head, and when the real number is different, the trust is gone.
Used values have returned to normal, healthy depreciation curves. The pandemic premium has evaporated. While the trade is worth less, new and pre-owned RVs are priced more competitively today, too.
That is actually good news for dealers if buyers understand it before they walk in. The problem is most of them do not. They still remember what their 2022 travel trailer was worth in 2023, and they have not adjusted their expectations to match today's market.
This is where your website can do real work. A trade-in estimation tool does not just capture leads. It manages expectations before the buyer ever sits down with your sales team. A buyer who already knows their unit is worth $22,000, not the $28,000 they hoped for, comes in ready to deal instead of ready to walk.
At Digital Power Solutions, this is exactly what TradeCycle is built to do. When a buyer on your website fills out a trade estimate, they get a real number in return. You get their contact information, what they own, and a lead that already has context. Your sales team does not have to start from zero. They can pick up a conversation that already started.
The Payment Barrier That Keeps Buyers From Committing
Here is the other side of the same problem.
A buyer finds a pre-owned motorhome on your lot. It is priced at $67,000. They like it. But they have no idea if that fits their budget. Interest rates have been high for a couple of years now, and they are nervous. So they do not submit a form. They do not call. They just keep browsing.
Elevated interest rates have been one of the major reasons consumers have reined in spending, leading to a downturn across the industry. Some manufacturers have less than 1% rates on promotional 36-month loans. Dealers will negotiate with a variety of financial institutions to secure lower interest rates for their buyers.
Buyers know rates are a variable. What they do not know (until someone shows them) is what that $67,000 motorhome actually costs per month at their credit level and term. When the monthly number is something they can see, the conversation shifts. It goes from "can I afford this?" to "when can I come in?"
This is what PayCycle does on your website. A buyer sets their monthly budget, and your inventory reorganizes around what actually fits. A $67,000 motorhome becomes a $589 per month motorhome. The sticker stops being the barrier.
Together, TradeCycle and PayCycle remove the two biggest pieces of hesitation keeping browsers from becoming leads: not knowing what their trade is worth, and not knowing if the payment fits.
What "Inventory Velocity" Actually Means for Your Dealership This Summer
Inventory velocity means how fast your units turn or how long they sit on your lot before they sell.
Inventory that sits costs you. Dealers who hold new units past 120 days are losing money in both floorplan fees and depreciation.
The harder challenge for dealers is knowing what the market is doing right now — at the model level, in their specific region — before the trade-in conversation starts or the listing goes live. Dealers who base acquisition on real-time market intelligence instead of optimistic trade allowances will protect gross more effectively.
This is the mindset shift that separates dealers who survive a soft market from the ones who lead it. You cannot price yesterday's unit at last year's value and expect it to move. The market has normalized. Buyers know it. The dealers who acknowledge it, and price and present accordingly, are the ones converting leads right now.
Five Things RV Dealers Should Do Right Now Before Summer Gets Away
The NPA promotion and the current market conditions point to the same thing: the dealers who act now, at the start of peak season, are in a completely different position from the ones who wait.
Here is what that looks like in practice.
1. Replenish your pre-owned inventory strategically. NPA's summer promotion is a real opportunity to source used units with built-in marketing assets. According to PBS's latest data, 11% of powersports dealers already carry RVs, and many RVs come in as trade-ins on powersports vehicles. The overlap is real. If you are a powersports or marine dealer who regularly takes RV trades, now is the time to be intentional about sourcing and listing those units with quality photos and clear pricing.
2. Set aging triggers and check them weekly. Leverage fast-selling used inventory by rotating your trade-in promotions every 30 to 45 days. Showcase high-demand pre-owned models with fresh photos and updated listings to maintain engagement. Do not let a unit drift past 60 days without a deliberate decision about pricing or promotion.
3. Give buyers a real trade value before they walk in. Trade-in shock kills deals. The fix is showing buyers a real number on your website before they ever sit down with your team. A trade-in tool on your website captures the lead and sets expectations at the same time. That is two problems solved in one step.
4. Show payment estimates, not just prices. Interest rates remain one of the biggest challenges in today's RV market, keeping financing costs higher than many buyers hoped. A buyer staring at a sticker price on your website has no idea if it is affordable. A buyer who sees a monthly payment does. Turn your inventory pages into something buyers can actually make decisions from.
5. Speed up your lead follow-up. This one does not cost anything but costs you deals when you ignore it. The new buyer arrives pre-researched, expects a written quote before a phone call, and judges the store on response speed and clarity within the first 90 seconds. A lead that sits in your CRM for 24 hours has already talked to two other dealers.
The Dealers Who Thrive This Summer Are Not the Ones With the Most Inventory
They are the ones with the best buyer experience from the first click to the close.
That means a website that gives buyers real numbers. A trade-in process that feels honest instead of surprising. A payment tool that turns inventory pages into conversations. And a follow-up process fast enough to catch buyers while they are still thinking about your lot.
The RV market is not broken. Buyers are showing up with clearer expectations, and the market is settling into something far more predictable than what the industry saw in 2022 and 2023. That is actually a good thing for dealers who are willing to meet buyers where they are.
The window to capture summer demand is open right now. The buyers are out there researching, comparing, and looking for the dealership that gives them enough real information to feel confident moving forward.
At Digital Power Solutions, we build TradeCycle and PayCycle to be that first real conversation, the one that happens on your website before your phone rings. When a buyer already knows their trade value and their payment range, they do not come in to browse. They come in to buy.
That is the edge.
Someone’s ready. Are you?
