Why Your Service Drive Brings More Repeat Customers (And How to Treat Your Techs Right)
September 17, 2026October Is Here and You Can Feel It
The phones get a little quieter. The Saturday rush isn't quite a rush anymore. Your sales team is standing around the coffee pot a bit longer than you'd like.
Meanwhile, the lot is still full, some of those units have been sitting since spring, your year-end numbers are staring at you from the whiteboard, and every day the floorplan bill keeps ticking. Fall and winter can feel like you're waiting for spring to save you.
Here's the good news. Your shoppers don't stop shopping when it gets cold, they just stop driving to your store to do it. They're on their phones, on the couch, at night, looking at your inventory. The question is whether your website is ready to meet them there.
Let's walk through what you should be thinking about right now to finish the year strong and set up an even better start to next year.

Your Shoppers Are Still Shopping Online
Before we get into the plan, let's look at how people buy today. Research from Cox Automotive shows that 92% of consumers use digital channels to research vehicles before they buy, and 86% still want to see the vehicle in person first (Demand Local). And buyers spend around 14 hours on average researching before they make a purchase (Jupiter Chevrolet). Most of it happens before anyone talks to your sales team. When shoppers are researching, top activities include checking prices, finding units for sale, comparing models, and finding out what their current vehicle is worth (Porch Group Media).
Shoppers want to know two things before they ever call you:
- What will this cost me each month?
- What's my trade worth?
If your website can't answer those questions, a competitor's website will. That's true in July, and it's even more true in December.
Year-End Sales Goals: Don't Wait for the Last Week
Every dealer has a year-end number in mind. The mistake many stores make is waiting until mid-December to push hard. By then, shoppers are busy with holidays, travel, and family. The better move is to start now. Break your year-end goal into monthly targets for October, November, and December. Then build marketing around each month instead of one big push at the end.
A few ideas to get you moving:
- Run a "Beat the Year-End Rush" promo in October to catch early planners.
- Tie November campaigns to Black Friday and holiday shopping.
- Use December for final model-year clearance and "last chance" deals.
Every one of these campaigns will send people to your website. Make sure the pages they land on make it easy to see payments, value a trade, and send you their info.
Aged Inventory Is Costing You Every Single Day
Those units that have been sitting since spring aren't just taking up space, they're eating your profit. Car dealers now report holding costs of $30 to $40 per unit per day once floorplan interest, insurance, depreciation, and opportunity costs are added up (AutoAlert). But RVs and boats often cost more to carry, because the price tags are bigger.
What It Costs RV Dealers
With floorplan rates around 10% in 2026, a $60,000 RV at wholesale piles up about $500 a month in interest alone. Add insurance, depreciation, and lost opportunity, and an $80,000 unit can cost $1,500 to $2,000 a month all-in (TrueRVs).
Waiting too long hurts twice. Units that sit past 120 days usually need price cuts of 10% to 15%. On a $60,000 travel trailer, that's $6,000 to $9,000 in lost margin (Rapidious Titan.AI). Across the industry, RVs aged past 90 days cost U.S. dealers nearly $65 million a month in carrying costs in 2025 (Rapidious Titan.AI).
What It Costs Marine Dealers
Boat dealers are feeling the squeeze too. In a July dealer survey, 63% said their new-boat inventory was too high, up from 54% in June. One dealer put it plainly, saying high floorplan rates made carrying extra boats feel like money flowing out the door (Trade Only Today).
Here's the flip side. Used-boat inventory is tight. In that same survey, 46% of dealers said used inventory was too low, compared to 25% who said too high (Trade Only Today). That means trade-ins are gold right now. Every trade you capture helps you sell a new boat and restock your used lineup at the same time.
So What Can You Do?
- Pull an aging report today. Know exactly which units are past 60, 90, and 120 days.
- Feature aged units on your homepage and social media, not buried on page five of your inventory.
- Show payments on those units. A $60,000 travel trailer can scare someone off. A monthly payment that fits their budget might not.
- Push trade-ins hard, especially if you sell boats. Every trade helps you move a unit and refill your used inventory.
This is where PayCycle and TradeCycle can do real work for you. PayCycle lets shoppers browse your inventory by monthly payment, so that aged unit suddenly shows up for someone who never would have clicked on it by price alone. TradeCycle gives shoppers a trade-in value right on your site, which gets them thinking about upgrading and fills your used lot with the units buyers want.
Holiday Promos: Shoppers Are Ready to Spend
Don't sleep on the holidays. People spend big money in November and December, and they do a lot of it online.
Shoppers spent a record $257.8 billion online during the 2025 holiday season, and Cyber Week alone brought in $44.2 billion (Chain Store Age). Black Friday set its own record too, with $11.8 billion in online spending, up 9.1% from the year before (Adobe). And this year is expected to be even bigger. Adobe predicts online holiday sales will hit a record $275.1 billion in 2026 (Adweek).
Here's the part dealers should really pay attention to. Buy now, pay later hit an all-time high during the 2025 holiday season, driving $20 billion in online spending (Chain Store Age). That tells you something important: shoppers think in monthly payments, not just price tags. They do it for TVs and couches. They definitely do it for boats, bikes, and campers.
Holiday promo ideas that work across verticals:
- "Gift the family a toy this year." Side-by-sides, PWCs, dirt bikes, and pop-up campers make great family gifts.
- Black Friday deals on accessories, gear, and aged units.
- "Under $X a month" holiday specials that point shoppers straight to payment-based inventory.
- Holiday gift cards for service, parts, or apparel.
When you run payment-based promos, PayCycle backs up your message. A shopper sees "Toys under $300 a month" in an ad, clicks, and lands on a page that actually shows them units at that payment. No guessing. No frustration.
Tax Season Starts Now
It might feel early, but you should start planning January and February content right now. Why? Tax refunds.
For a lot of your buyers, a tax refund is their down payment. And refunds were big this year. The average federal refund was $3,276 in the 2026 filing season through early May, up 11.5% from 2025, and the highest for that point in the season in IRS data going back to 2009 (Choice Tax Relief).
Timing matters too. The IRS has to hold refunds that include certain family tax credits until after mid-February, so refund sizes usually jump in late February (Tax Foundation). That means late February into March is prime time for shoppers with cash in hand.
How to prepare:
- Plan "Put Your Refund to Work" campaigns for late January through March.
- Create blog posts and social content that explain how a refund can lower monthly payments.
- Build email lists now, so you have people to reach when refunds hit.
PayCycle is a natural fit here. When shoppers can adjust their down payment and see their monthly payment change, your refund message becomes real to them. TradeCycle helps too. A refund plus a trade can turn "maybe next year" into "let's do this now."
What Each Vertical Should Watch This Season
Every dealer faces the slow season a little differently. Here's a quick look.
RV Dealers
Snowbird season is a big deal. Florida and Arizona have long been top spots for RVing snowbirds, with large RV communities that show up each winter (Wikipedia). And many snowbirds buy in the fall or early winter before they head out (Freedom RV). Many of these shoppers are doing their research online before they ever leave home. Northern dealers can lean into clearance, since late fall and winter are slower months when shoppers often look for year-end pricing (Freedom RV).
Powersports Dealers
Snowmobiles hit their peak in cold markets. Hunting season drives ATV and UTV interest in the fall. In the South, cooler weather means prime riding season. Use TradeCycle to help riders swap summer toys for winter machines.
Motorcycle Dealers
Riding slows down in much of the country, but that's when smart riders start planning their next bike. Promote winterization and storage services, and use trade-in tools to capture riders thinking about an upgrade before spring.
Marine Dealers
Northern markets shift to winterization and storage. Southern and Gulf markets are just heading into peak boating season. Boat show season also kicks off in the fall and winter, and show shoppers will check your website before and after. With used inventory tight, trade-in values help owners decide to upgrade before they pay to store a boat they're replacing, and they help you restock.
Slow Season Is When Your Website Does the Heavy Lifting
When showroom traffic drops, your website becomes your best salesperson. It works nights, weekends, Christmas Eve when your store is closed. And during the holidays, a lot of that shopping happens on phones. Adobe expects mobile to account for 57.4% of online holiday spending this season (StockTitan).
But your website can only sell if it answers the questions shoppers actually have.
That's why we built PayCycle and TradeCycle.
PayCycle answers the payment question. Shoppers can browse your inventory by monthly payment, set a budget, and find units that fit. It helps move aged inventory, supports your holiday and tax-season promos, and sends you leads from people who already know what they can afford.
TradeCycle answers the trade question. Shoppers get a value on their current vehicle, boat, RV, or bike right on your site. That gets them thinking about upgrading, and it gives you their contact info so your team can follow up.
Together, they capture leads 24/7 while your lot is quiet. So when a shopper is scrolling at 10 p.m. on a Tuesday in January, you're not missing out. You're getting a lead.
Your Fall and Winter Checklist
- Set monthly targets for October, November, and December.
- Pull your aging report and put aged units front and center online.
- Plan Black Friday and holiday promos now, not the week before.
- Start building tax-season content and email lists for January through March.
- Make sure your website shows payments and trade values on every unit.
- Review your lead follow-up process so no online lead sits overnight.
